WHY WE CLEANSE:
Chronically ingesting inflammatory foods, without giving the lining of the gut a chance to heal, can also lead to “leaky gut”.
Cleansing, or “resetting the digestive tract” is something that helps with specific symptoms, but it is truly a preventive and maintenance health measure that should be performed 1-2 times per year regardless.
As humans we are adapted to do many things, one of the most amazing is our ability to self-heal. However, to do this optimally takes time, energy and effort.
The 12 days of the ‘Fall Cleanse’ and the 12 days of the ‘Spring Cleanse’ are the 24 days of the year when one makes “healing” an absolute top priority.
Why Fall?
An important piece of Ayurveda is moving with the rhythms and cycles of nature.
Most mammals do not have a choice in this matter: they eat the foods that are seasonally available to them and this produces a varied diet throughout the year.
Humans have invented electricity, refrigerators, grocery stores and airplanes, so our eating structure has changed vastly over the past few hundred years, while our mammalian bodies, evolving over millions of years, have not changed quite so rapidly.
Our bodies do not process foods in the same way all year. Therefore we do not produce the same types of energy, hormones, endorphins or wastes the same way all year.
Ayurveda holds the tenet that our bodies go through seasonal changes just like nature.
The Summer is “Pitta season” (Elements: Fire and Water) and heat can accumulate in the body. Too much heat of course produces imbalance and can lead to liver disease, indigestion, inflammation, heart disease and anxiety to name a few.
As we transition to Fall/Winter we enter “Vata season” (Elements: Air and Ether).
During this cleanse we will discuss concepts in terms of modern medicine, as well as continuing to build a foundation in the principles of Ayurveda, or "health as balance".
